How to Plan a Business Website Before You Hire a Developer

Most website projects that go wrong do so before any design starts. The goal is vague, the content is not ready, or nobody agreed what the site needed to do. A little planning fixes most of that.

This guide is for business owners who are about to hire a developer or agency, whether in Lahore or anywhere else. Work through these steps and you will have a clearer brief, better conversations and fewer surprises.

1. Decide what the website is for

Write one sentence that describes the main job of your website. For example: "Help homeowners understand our services and request a quote," or "Give existing customers an easy way to find our contact details and opening hours." If you cannot write that sentence, the website will struggle to do anything well.

Then list the one or two actions you most want a visitor to take: call, send an enquiry, book, or buy. Every page should make those actions easy to find.

2. Know who you are speaking to

Describe your typical customer in plain words. What do they already know? What are they worried about? What would make them trust you? A website for busy trade customers reads very differently from one for first-time buyers.

3. Plan your pages

Most small business websites need a small set of clear pages: a home page, a page for each main service, an about page, and a contact page. Sketch the list before talking to a developer. It helps you discuss scope in concrete terms.

  • Which pages do you need at launch?
  • Which pages can wait for later?
  • What should a visitor find on each page?

4. Gather your content early

Content is the most common reason website projects stall. Collect what you already have: your logo, service descriptions, real photos of your work and team, answers to common customer questions, and your contact details. Note what is missing so you can agree who will create it.

5. Agree what "done" means

Before work starts, agree with your developer what will be delivered, how you will review it, how changes are handled and who will look after the site after launch. Put it in writing. Clear scope protects both sides.

6. Think beyond launch

A website needs updates: new services, new photos, changed hours. Decide who will make those changes and how. If you want people to find the site through search, plan for that too. Our SEO starting guide explains the basics.

A quick checklist

  • One sentence describing the website’s main job
  • The main action you want visitors to take
  • A short description of your typical customer
  • A list of pages for launch
  • Your available content, and what is missing
  • A written, agreed scope
  • A plan for updates after launch

SEO for Lahore Businesses: A Plain-English Starting Guide

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the work of helping search engines understand your website so that people searching for what you offer are more likely to find it. It is not a trick, and it is not instant.

This guide is for business owners in Lahore who keep hearing about SEO and want to understand what it involves before paying anyone for it.

What SEO actually covers

SEO work usually falls into three areas. Each one matters, and they support each other.

Technical SEO makes sure search engines can reach and read your website. That includes pages loading properly, working on mobile phones, and not being hidden from search engines by mistake.

On-page SEO is about each page clearly saying what it is about. That means a descriptive page title, a sensible main heading, clear subheadings and a short description that appears in search results.

Content is about publishing pages that answer the questions your customers really ask. A page that clearly explains a service, with the details a customer needs, is more useful than a page stuffed with keywords.

Start with your customers’ words

Write down how your customers describe what they need, in their own words. A customer is more likely to search "AC repair in Johar Town" than the technical name of your service. Those phrases help shape your page titles and content.

Simple things you can check today

  • Does each page have its own clear title, not just your business name?
  • Does your website work well on a phone?
  • Are your address and phone number written the same way everywhere?
  • Does each service have its own page that explains it properly?
  • Would a new customer understand what you do within a few seconds?

Be careful with promises

No honest SEO provider can guarantee a first-page ranking, a set amount of traffic or a specific number of sales. Search results depend on many things outside anyone’s control. Be cautious of anyone who promises results like that.

Questions to ask an SEO provider

  • What exactly will you change on my website, and why?
  • How will you report what you have done?
  • How will we review progress together?
  • What do you need from me, such as content or access?

Good SEO starts with a good website. If your site needs work first, our guide to planning a business website is a useful place to begin.

POS Solution or Custom Software? How to Decide What Your Business Needs

If your business sells to customers in person, you will eventually ask how to record sales and keep daily operations organized. Two common routes are a point-of-sale (POS) solution and custom software. They solve different problems.

This guide is for business owners, including those in the USA and Canada, who are weighing up the two and want a clear way to decide.

What a POS solution is for

A POS solution is the system used to record sales at the counter. In general, it can help you ring up sales, keep records of transactions and keep day-to-day trading organized. Many businesses have similar needs at the counter, which is why ready POS solutions exist.

What custom software is for

Custom software is built around a specific workflow that ready tools do not handle well. It is usually considered when a business has a process that is unusual, when staff spend a lot of time on workarounds, or when information is spread across spreadsheets and messages.

Questions to answer first

  • What problem are you solving? Recording sales at the counter is a different problem from managing a unique internal process.
  • How standard is your workflow? If your sales process is similar to other businesses like yours, a ready solution may fit.
  • Where do things go wrong today? List the specific steps that waste time or cause mistakes.
  • Who will use it? Think about the staff at the counter and in the back office.
  • What happens as you grow? Consider whether your needs are likely to change.

When a POS solution may be the better starting point

If your main need is recording sales and keeping transaction records in order, and your way of selling is fairly typical, starting with a POS solution often makes sense. It is designed for exactly that job.

When custom software may be worth considering

If your team keeps working around tools that do not fit, or a key part of your operation has no good ready-made option, custom software may be worth discussing. The scope should be defined after a proper conversation about how your business works.

It does not have to be one or the other

Some businesses use a POS solution at the counter and look at custom software for a separate process. The right answer depends on your situation.
